Mairin Matthews

Without realizing it, Mairin began her practice while growing up attending Quaker Meeting. During the silent worship, she became comfortable with the quiet and introspection at a very young age. As she grew older, she was drawn to yoga and breathwork after feeling the equanimity it brought to her mind and body during some big life challenges. Mairin began incorporating some breathing and mindful movement into her lessons when she was teaching in an Emotional Support classroom in Philadelphia schools.

It was then that she decided she wanted to share this practice with others and got her certification in Hatha Yoga at Marianne Wells Yoga School. Since then, Mairin has taught all over the city at non-profits, healing collectives, parks, gyms, and businesses. She wrote a yoga and mindfulness curriculum and piloted a full time program in a K-6 school in Philadelphia where she taught over 1200 students. She also spent a few years as the Focus Studio Director at City Fitness, where she led several yoga events, professional development and worked with an incredible team of instructors.

Mairin believes that yoga is for every body and she lives by her teacher's philosophy "teach people, not poses". Her classes are filled with fun sequencing, exploration, a focus on alignment, and {always} lots of options and she is so excited and grateful to get to work with and meet the Lumos community!
